Medical Assemble: Tomorrow’s Heroes
Saturday, September 7th, 2024 – The Malaysian Medical Summit (MMS) 2024 took place on the 7th and 8th of September at the University of Cyberjaya, bringing together 100 medical and pre-medical students for two days of immersive learning and discussion. With a lineup of 30 esteemed speakers and a dedicated committee of 50, the summit provided a platform to explore critical issues and innovations shaping Malaysia’s healthcare landscape. The event was made possible in partnership with Health Expert as the media partner, further elevating the summit’s reach and impact.
The summit was launched by Dr. Hirman Ismail, Deputy Director (Medical Profession) Medical Development Division MOH and the opening speech was delivered by Kavilan Murthi, Co-chair of MMI 2023/2024. Danesh Pasupati, Vice President of the Cyberjaya University Surgical Society (CUTSS), and Dr. Hairel Bin Selamat, Deputy Dean of the University of Cyberjaya, also shared insights on the current and future direction of medical education in Malaysia.
“What’s Stopping Us from Being Better?
One of the keynote speeches, “What’s Stopping Us from Being Better? Healthcare Edition,” was particularly impactful. It highlighted the rapidly advancing technologies in medicine and the readiness of healthcare professionals to adapt to these changes. This address emphasized the need for continuous learning and adaptability in the face of evolving medical technologies and practices. The keynote shed light on how advancements in fields such as telemedicine, AI in diagnostics, and innovative treatment modalities are transforming healthcare delivery and outcomes.
A major focus was the Career Prospects keynote, which aimed to help students gain clarity in choosing their future specializations. Insights into fields like Neurosurgery, Pediatric Cardiology, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology provided students with a comprehensive understanding of various career paths, enabling them to make informed decisions about their professional journeys.

On Day 1, the summit featured essential workshops, including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), conducted by the Monash First Aid Bureau. These workshops were instrumental in providing crucial foundational skills for healthcare staff and students. They emphasized the importance of preparedness and effective response in emergency situations, underscoring that mastery of BLS and ACLS is vital for ensuring that healthcare professionals are equipped to handle critical scenarios. The training sessions were interactive and hands-on, allowing participants to practice life-saving techniques and gain confidence in their emergency response abilities.
Day 2 included a Panel Discussion on Rising Healthcare Costs and Affordability Challenges, where experts discussed the financial strains faced by patients and providers. A notable highlight was the attendance of YB Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, who engaged with participants and contributed to the discussions. The event also addressed pressing social issues with a Panel Discussion on PrEP: How Prepared Are We? and a debate on Abortion Rights, ensuring participants gained a well-rounded understanding of current healthcare debates.
In addition to the informative sessions and workshops, attendees had the opportunity to visit booths from key industry players, including Nay Lab Sdn. Bhd., Unam Pharmaceutical (M) Sdn. Bhd., and FA Signature. These booths showcased the latest products and services in the medical field, providing participants with firsthand insights into emerging technologies and innovations. The presence of these industry leaders added a practical dimension to the summit, allowing attendees to interact with cutting-edge medical solutions and learn about advancements that could impact their future practice.
Through workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, MMS 2024 successfully bridged the gap between education and practice, leaving participants better prepared to navigate and contribute to the future of healthcare in Malaysia.
