As medical students approach the final phase of their academic journey, the transition into housemanship becomes a crucial yet challenging step. This period requires students to shift from theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world medical application, particularly for those aiming to specialize in surgery. The transition can be intimidating, as surgery demands a unique blend of technical skills and a calm, focused mindset in high-pressure environments. To address these challenges, the UKM Surgical Society (UKMSS) hosted the Housemanship Essential Surgical Skills (HESS) Workshop on 23rd November at UKM, gathering 80 participants eager to enhance their surgical capabilities.
The HESS Workshop was designed to provide medical students with a hands-on introduction to the core surgical skills needed during housemanship rotations in General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G), and Orthopaedics. These specialties are central to housemanship training, and proficiency in key surgical techniques is vital for any aspiring surgeon.
During the event, participants were given the opportunity to practice fundamental surgical skills such as suturing, incision making, and wound care under the watchful eyes of experienced surgeons. This interactive approach ensured students not only understood the theory behind these procedures but also gained the confidence to perform them in a real clinical setting. By simulating scenarios they are likely to encounter during housemanship, students were able to refine their techniques and develop a greater understanding of surgical precision.
Expert Guidance from Leading Surgeons
A highlight of the HESS Workshop was the opportunity to learn directly from a distinguished panel of surgeons. Throughout the event, participants received invaluable insights from experts such as Prof. Datuk Dr. Sabarul Afian Mokhtar, Dr. Norliyana Binti Mazli, Dr. Azmi bin Alias, Dr. Hisham Arshad Bin Dr. Habeebullah Khan, Dr. Marjmin Osman, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ixora Kamisan Atan, Prof. Dr. Lim Pei Shan, and Dr. Phon Su Ee. These surgeons guided the students through both the technical and mental aspects of surgical practice, offering advice on how to handle the pressures of housemanship and improve their surgical skills.

Their mentorship provided participants with the tools and confidence needed to face the challenges of their upcoming rotations. This one-on-one interaction allowed students to ask questions and gain practical advice on how to approach real-life clinical scenarios, enhancing their overall readiness for housemanship.

Bridging the Gap Between Medical School and Housemanship
One of the main objectives of the workshop was to bridge the gap between medical school and housemanship. The event allowed students to immerse themselves in the practicalities of surgery, gaining a firsthand understanding of what their future rotations will entail. This experience ensured they would enter housemanship not just with knowledge but with the confidence and practical skills to excel from day one.

A Collaborative Effort to Shape Future Surgeons
The HESS Workshop also marked a significant milestone for UKM Surgical Society as its inaugural event. The collaboration between various medical institutions, including the Malaysian Orthopaedics Association (MOA), the College of Surgeons Academy of Medicine Malaysia (CSAMM), and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UKM, brought together a wealth of expertise to share with the next generation of doctors.
Additionally, the workshop included an MOU signing ceremony between BBRAUN and MSSS, underscoring the commitment to advancing medical education and ensuring that future surgeons have access to the latest resources and tools for training.
The Housemanship Essential Surgical Skills Workshop was an invaluable experience for the 80 medical students who participated. By offering practical training, expert mentorship, and a deeper understanding of what to expect in their future surgical rotations, the workshop successfully prepared students for the challenges ahead. With the skills and confidence gained through this event, these future house officers are now better equipped to excel in their careers and contribute to the advancement of healthcare.
